Opinion: Out-of-state hunters aren’t the problem. Here’s how to sustain and improve hunting in the West. A disgruntled hunter wrote a Writers on the Range opinion recently about Westerners getting fed up with the many out-of-staters coming in and buying up draw licenses to shoot bull elk, deer, bear and other big game animals. As a hunter myself, I understand their frustration. But reducing non-resident tags, as Andrew Carpenter suggests, takes us in the wrong direction. The greatest threat to hunting now and in the future is the loss of habitat.Private lands provide up to 80% of the habitat for all wildlife species, including the critical winter range that’s the limiting factor for most big game populations. Yet these family farms and ranches are struggling for economic survival and in many places are under immense development pressure.According to the American Farmland Trust, Colorado is on track to lose approximately a half-million acres of open land in the next two decades. Other states have similarly alarming projections. As these lands disappear, so does the wildlife they support.I...

Real Estate: Memories, friends, timing drive wish for a second home The beach-condo pipe dream began unfolding in June, but really, it goes back to my childhood — a big idea with a miniscule chance. What was I thinking? Second homes are for other people. One home is more than I can handle. But in June, my husband and I sold a condo our youngest daughter had lived in while she attended grad school. And suddenly, we had funds that for once didn’t need to go toward a child’s tuition, orthodontia or some other form of child support. The last kid had flown.Meanwhile, several friends who live near us in the Orlando area, only an hour’s drive from the Atlantic, were getting beach condos. Adding to the motivation: I grew up in Southern California and as a teen, spent my summers on the sands of. Newport Beach. So, timing, friends, proximity, nostalgia and those freed-up funds conspired. When I could no longer keep this crazy dream to myself, I shared my idea with my husband, DC, one summer night during a rare inning when the Pirates were winning. He rais...

Everyone gets their chance to laugh during this TheatreWorks show Meredith McDonough was in for a happy surprise last month, when she was asked – in somewhat last-minute fashion – to step in and direct TheatreWorks’ holiday season production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”“Originally, James Monroe Iglehart was directing this show,” McDonough explains. “Then, through his good fortune, the ‘Spamalot’ that he had been a part of suddenly announced they were going to Broadway during this time.”Ironically, Monroe was busy doing “Falsettos” — another musical by “Spelling Bee” composer-lyricist William Finn — in Minneapolis when she first fielded the call from TheatreWorks.Yet, she did have an opening in her calendar for November and December, so she ended up packing her bags and heading back out to the Bay Area — where she had spent four years serving as the company’s director of new works.“I am thrilled to be back at TheatreWorks,” she says.Theater lovers can also enjoy the McDonough-TheatreWorks reunion by attending “...

The Vikings are relishing Brian Flores running their defense as long as they can MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings stumbled to an 0-3 start, endured seven games without superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson and have started three different quarterbacks after king-of-durability Kirk Cousins went down with a season-ending injury. How, then, have they managed to maintain control of a spot in the playoffs with five games to go? That’s a tribute to Brian Flores, whose bold debut as Minnesota’s defensive coordinator will undoubtedly put him in the conversation for head coach vacancies around the NFL when the next hiring cycle begins.“I’m having a great time coaching this team. I am thankful for the opportunity to coach this group of guys,” Flores said. “It’s fun group to coach. They work hard. It’s important to them.”Flores has not only rejuvenated a defense that had been struggling for the last three years — and even through the first three weeks of this season — but served as a valuable confidant to head coach Kevin O’Connell as the Viking...
